Professor Alexander Balandin Elected Fellow of the American Physical Society
Dr. Alexander A. Balandin, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Founding Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California – Riverside (UCR) was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). His election was approved on November 14, 2011 at the meeting of the Council of APS.
Professor Balandin is recognized for his “pioneering studies of phonon transport in graphene and outstanding contributions to investigation of confined phonons and excitons in semiconductor nanostructures.”
Professor Balandin conducts experimental and theoretical research in the field of advanced materials, nanostructures and electronic devices. He is a recipient of this year’s IEEE Pioneer Award in Nanotechnology for his research on device applications of semiconductor quantum dots and graphene. A significant part of his research on graphene thermal properties and device applications, noted in the APS citation, was conducted in the framework of FENA center activities.

FENA Student Receives the Best in Session Award for Graphene Research at TECHCON
Electrical Engineering PhD Candidate Guanxiong Liu, who conducts his dissertation research in Professor Alexander Balandin’s Nano-Device Laboratory (NDL) at the University of California – Riverside (UCR), received the Best in Session Award in the Graphene Session of the SRC TECHCON conference. Guanxion Liu’s research poster and paper were entitled Fabrication and Characterization of Graphene Triple-Mode Amplifiers and Phase-Detectors for Analog Circuit Applications. TECHCON is the primary event where SRC presents the best of research sponsored by the members, and showcases the students who perform the research. It is also the venue for recognizing industry and university participants who make SRC a world-class research management organization. The TECHCON paper presentations were judged by the representatives from member companies, using a standard set of criteria and considering both paper presentation and poster.
